Editor’s note: We previously misstated that the second round of open enrollment closed Monday. It closes Feb. 15, 2015.
If the first round of open enrollment for Obamacare was any indication, Antioch may have the highest number of people in the state using the federal marketplace to get health insurance.
During that first round, which ran from October to March, nearly 2,900 residents living in Antioch and Cane Ridge signed up for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act as of April. ZIP code 37013 had more than double the signups of any other ZIP code in the state, except the neighboring 37211.
That area also has one of the highest uninsured rates in Tennessee. Jackie Shrago, a volunteer who’s been guiding people through the signup process, said many immigrants living there work multiple part-time jobs without benefits.
“I talked to a man yesterday who said, ‘I haven’t had insurance for 10 years. It wasn’t until this law passed that I could get it,’” she said.
The high signup number also stems from volunteers, like Shrago, deliberately focusing on areas with high numbers of uninsured people. She said they’re trying to benefit from word-of-mouth advertising, setting up in the same place each week.
This second round of open enrollment for Obamacare closes Feb. 15, but Monday is the last day to sign up for coverage by Jan. 1. Shrago said she expects Antioch to lead the state in signups again.
